The owner found it necessary to destroy the cow, which was a pure bred Shorthorn of a local district strain.

BOLT IN MAIN STREET.
A pony attached to a sulky,  both the property of  H.J. Roush, had bolted down the main street.  The unsuccessful negotiation of a post after the first few yards left the sulky a tangled wreck,  but the pony continued it’s mad career,  burdened only by it’s harness and shafts.  It galloped along mostly under the awnings, but was stopped near the A.J.S. Bank, where it made a deposit.

Ordered tobacco, got sand
Several days ago a Warwick grocery store ordered £17 worth of tobacco from Brisbane, but when the consignment was opened on Monday afternoon, shortly after arrival at Warwick railway station, all that the case was found to contain were three biscuit tins half filled with sand and wrapped in bags.  The quantity of sand contained in the tins weighed practically.the same as the tobacco, and outwardly there were no signs that the consignment had been tampered with. Inquiries are now being made to endeavor to ascertain where the interference occurred.

Death of two Sparrows
At a meeting of the Allora Town Council, a complaint had been received that three sparrows had made their appearance in the main street, and if not exterminated would do considerable damage in the district.  The Council issued the necessary instructions to have the birds shot, and two have been “bagged” with a shotgun fired by Mr. Jenkins.

It was understood that the building of the Forest Plains cheese factory was to be commenced. All the work was to be done by day labour under the supervision of Mr. W.H. Lyle, district manager of the Silverwood Butter Company. The factory was to cover a floor space of 72 feet by 50 feet, and was being fitted with machinery capable of treating 1800 gallons a day.

FARMER’S SON INJURED.
Earl Erlandson, the 19 year old son of Mr. W. Erlandson, Hendon, met with a painful accident on Monday morning, necessitating medical attention in Allora. He had yarded a horse in a crush pen on his father’s property when the animal lashed out and struck a rail. The other end was dashed against Erlandson’s head, inflicting a gash near the ear. Five stitches were inserted in the wound and the patient was allowed to return home.

PIONEERING ECHOES
In an interesting article, in a recent issue of The Australasian, on Fred Bracker, who shares with the Leslies the title of being the “father” of the pastoral industry in Queensland, the following passage occurs:- “While in charge of Rosenthal, Bracker experimented with the cultivation of lucerne, and proved it’s success as a fodder plant.  With the seed that was subsequently brought out by the Gillams, as the outcome of Bracker’s experiments, lucerne—finest of all imported fodders—became established in Queensland and thrived amazingly.  The Gillams were an English family from the South Downs in Sussex, and they share with Bracker the honours of really introducing the wonderful medic.  The Gillam family referred to came to the Downs in 1863 and settled in Warwick. In 1866, when Spring Creek was opened for selection, the family went to the Clifton district, and have been prominent members of that district ever since.
